Chances are you’ve probably heard of Botox before. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. Over six million people get Botox each year to fight wrinkles and fine lines. At Lake Jackson Medical Spa, we want you to be informed about the procedure and what it can do to give you a glowing youthful appearance.
What’s in Botox?
A Botox injection contains botulinum toxin, which is derived from a chemical commonly found in nature called Clostridium botulinum. Large doses can be lethal, but botulinum is perfectly safe in small quantities.
After you get a Botox injection, the botulinum toxin prevents nerves from transmitting a chemical called acetylcholine from reaching your muscle cells. Acetylcholine normally sends a signal to your muscles to contract. Botulinum toxin stops the signal and paralyzes the muscle. Once the muscle stops moving, your wrinkles soften. The effect is temporary until the next injection.
Getting a Botox injection
Botox injections are quick and painless. Most of our patients report not feeling anything. We use a fine needle to inject the Botox into the areas you want to address. Botox commonly treats lip lines, forehead lines, smile lines, and Crow’s feet. You may feel mild discomfort and a small headache after the procedure.
When you should expect to see results
You won’t see the results right away. You should expect to start to see results in about a week or two, and your wrinkles will continue to smooth out over the next few months. You should avoid drinking alcohol one week before the procedure, and avoid painkillers two weeks before the procedure, or else signs of bruising will start to appear.
Contrary to popular belief, patients with Botox can continue to make facial expressions. In proper doses, your face shouldn’t feel any signs of numbness.
How long does Botox last?
Botox can last anywhere between three to six months. Your muscles gradually begin to contract once again and form wrinkles unless you get another injection. The wrinkles that return are noticeably smaller and less noticeable than before the treatment.
The right age for Botox
The truth is it is up to you when you want to get Botox. Every patient is different, and wrinkles can appear at any age. The right time to start getting Botox is whenever you begin to be bothered by fine lines. You can get Botox for years without noticeable side effects.
Possible risks
Botox is safe for most people, but there are cases that require more caution. If you identify with any of the following, it is important to come in for a consultation.
- Nursing
- Pregnancy
- Multiple sclerosis
- Muscle weakness
- Drooping eyelids
Since botulinum can be dangerous in large quantities, it’s important that you only get Botox from a verified and experienced doctor.
Is Botox covered by insurance?
Botox is usually conducted for cosmetic purposes, therefore it usually isn’t covered by your insurance. Please consult your insurance company for details.
