Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness and the appearance of blood vessels and acne-like bumps on the face. Symptoms can flare up for hours to months. It most commonly affects middle-aged women with light skin who smoke, but it can affect anyone. There is no cure for rosacea, but symptoms can be managed.
Signs of rosacea include:
- Facial redness.
- Swollen red bumps.
- Feeling of warmth or tenderness in the face.
- Eye problems, including swelling and dryness.
- Enlarged nose, called rhinophyma.
The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, but both hereditary and environmental factors likely contribute to the condition. Triggers of rosacea are things that increase blood flow to the surface of the skin, including:
- Spicy foods.
- Hot drinks.
- Alcohol.
- Extreme hot or cold temperatures.
- Sun exposure or wind.
- Strong emotions.
- Exercise.
- Cosmetic products.
- Certain drugs, especially blood pressure medications.
The best way to treat rosacea is to avoid triggers, especially sun exposure. Certain skin care routines, like using a mind cleanser with cool water, can also help. Long-term treatments include laser or light therapy. Prescription creams also may be recommended.
